The bakery's request

Client

We are putting three new breads on the shelf, and each needs a line for its name card. I want them to feel the same as the cards we already have.

Client

Here are the ones we have now. "Butter croissant — Baked at six every morning, layer upon layer of butter. Crisp at the first bite, rich at the second." "Rye loaf — A slow ferment for a deep, hearty taste. Lovely with a slice of cheese."

Hanna

The new breads are a fig campagne, a mugwort mochi bun, and a potato focaccia. Hand it to Ari.

Summary

What this request teaches

How far does "answer like an expert" really go? Through a bakery's product labels and a tenant's lease, learn how to give a role, how to show the shape you want with examples, and what a role cannot do for you.

Show the key points (best read after finishing the request)
  • A role ("You are a copywriter for a neighborhood bakery") sets the point of view and tone of the answer.
  • Show a format that is hard to describe with one or two examples. They are far more precise than an adjective like "emotional".
  • A role does not make the AI know a field better. It can make the tone sound expert and so seem more trustworthy.
  • Do not hand a judgment to the AI. Hand it work that supports the judgment: explaining plainly, finding what to look at, listing questions.
  • When the AI follows an example, check any facts it adds against the original information.

Try it yourself

If you write similar text again and again, put two of your earlier pieces in as examples and ask with the template below.

Write [what]. Match the length, tone, and structure of the two examples below exactly.

Example 1: [something you wrote before]
Example 2: [something you wrote before]

What goes in this time: [the new facts]
Do not make up facts that are not given.
